Romania: 20 percent of wheat affected by floods

Bucharest / RO. (div) This year the wheat production will be lower than anticipated initially, 15 to 20 percent of the cultivated area being affected by unfavourable weather conditions, the secretary of state in the Ministry of Agriculture, Adrian Radulescu, said in a press release. Of the total area cultivated with wheat – 2,06 million hectares, 1,05 million hectares have been harvested by 21 July, which is 51 percent of total. The average per hectare production was 2’863 tons against the estimated one of 3’221 tons per hectare. Radulescu says the wheat production will be lower this year but will be enough to cover the domestic demand. Half of the production obtained can be used in bakeries and half for fodder. According to the release the price of wheat may grow in the fall, because of the reduced domestic production and of external problems especially in Russia. Radulescu explained that the higher prices of wheat should not be found in the price of bread up to the level of 700 RON per ton, at present the price being 520 RON per ton for bakery wheat.
