Romania: Alka Group to invest 11.5 million EUR

Bucharest / RO. (hhl) Romania’s food manufacturer Alka Group this week announced an investment of 11.5 million EUR in a new plant in the Ploiesti Industrial Park. The confectionery maker with well known brands like «Alfers» and «Toortitzi», wants to produce mainly salted snacks and sweet biscuits in the new factory in Romania’s South, and plans to create 100 new jobs. The construction of the 10’000-square-meter factory is mainly financed by the Alka shareholders. The public aid granted by the Romanian government amounts to 2.4 million EUR.

Alka currently produces salted and sweet biscuits (cakes, cakes, waffles, various snacks) at its Bucharest location. It also produces the coffee brands «Gold Mocca» and «Stretto». The products are sold in almost all food stores in Romania, and around ten percent of the production is exported, including to Germany.

Founded in 1994, the company was originally focused only on the distribution of roasted coffee. Last year the Group posted a net profit of 1.26 million RON, up 80 percent on the year, on a turnover of 166 million RON, 21 percent higher than in the previous year. In 2016 the Group employed an average of 600 people.

Alka’s main competitors in the salted and sweet biscuits segment include the Greek company Chipita, which delivers the Romanian market since 1995, the European Food + Drinks Group of the domestic business brothers Micula and the Turkish company ETI, which operates a biscuits and other bakery products factory in Craiova since 2016.
