Moscow / RU. (itt) Prices of bread, Russia’s staple food number one, have started going up and pushing up the rest of foodstuffs and consumer goods. In Russia’s western regions, bread has become 30 percent to 40 percent more expensive.
New York City / NY. (wib) Subway is the first large restaurant chain to list calories on its New York restaurant menu boards as required by a new law, announces a press release. In addition to Subway – 27.836 restaurants in 86 countries – the pretzel chain Auntie Anne´s Inc. is complying with the regulation and Johnny Rockets Group Inc. and Arby’s LLC have submitted sample menu boards to the city, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) says.
London / UK. (wib) Pre-packed sandwiches may contain the same amount of salt as a Big Mac. A study, carried out by health lobby group Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH), suggests that many sandwiches bought at retail outlets contain more than a third of the day´s recommended salt intake.
Brussels / EU. (wib) The European Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation came with the beginning of July into force. That means, food companies will only be able to make claims about their nutritional or health benefits approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
New York / NY. (wib) New York City´s ban on trans-fat-laden cooking oils, the first of its kind in the United States, is now in effect. Along with the ban, fast-food restaurants are now required to post calories on their menu.
