FDA: British supermarkets could be cleaner

London / UK. (fda) A survey carried out on British supermarkets has found that 150 outlets run by major chains are in breach of hygiene regulations, and that Tesco is the worst offender. Waitrose were found to be running the cleanest stores in the country, ahead of Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury´s and Asda. In the survey, which was published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), checks were carried out on aisles, bakeries, fish-mongers, cafes, staff canteens, and petrol stations. In a one-to-five star rating system, twenty out of the 490 Tesco stores examined were judged to have two stars or less, whereas all of the Waitrose stores scored either four or five stars. Tesco has defended itself by dismissing the survey as subjective and therefore liable to provide misleading findings.
