General Mills: Hundreds of jobs are lost

Minneapolis / MN. (beu) General Mills Inc. approved two restructuring actions. These actions are expected to be completed by February 28, 2009 – the shutdown of two manufacturing facilities. «We completed an analysis of the viability of our Bakeries and Foodservice frozen dough facility in Trenton, Ontario, and will close the plant, affecting 470 employees», General Mills explains. Company officials say the move was prompted by the company´s decision to consolidate portions of its frozen bakery and food service business. Many of the products affected were produced at the Trenton facility. All other production will be consolidated at other plants within the company´s supply chain. General Mills also decided to exit the frozen waffle business (retail and foodservice) and to close the frozen waffle plant in Allentown, Pennsylvania, affecting 111 employees. Earlier in the first quarter of this year General Mills also approved the restructuring of the production scheduling and the discontinuation of the cake product line at Chanhassen (Minnesota). That action affected 125 employees.
