Newcastle upon Tyne / UK. (gs) British Greggs PLC, the leading bakery food-on-the-go retailer in the United Kingdom with 2,500 retail outlets throughout the country, invests in a new, state-of-the-art frozen manufacturing and logistics site to support further growth plans. In line with the company’s plans to significantly expand its manufacturing and logistics network, Greggs has entered into a lease agreement for the new facility at SmartParc Sergo Derby in Spondon, Derby.

The new site, which is currently being developed and is expected to open in late 2026, will provide Greggs with additional manufacturing and logistics capacity, as the company extends its network to service up to 3,500 shops in the United Kingdom. The new purpose-built facility will provide additional manufacturing capacity for products – including sweet and savoury production lines – as well as logistics for frozen storage and fully automated robotic order picking and distribution. Additional capacity is available to invest in new manufacturing platforms and production lines to meet future category growth, innovation and development, as well as volume demand.

With sustainability being a key focus for Greggs, this site has been designed with the environment in mind, with features including an onsite shared Energy Centre – a centralised heating and cooling system that recycles heat from refrigeration plants across the estate – a rainwater harvesting system, photovoltaic panels and charging points for electric vehicles.
Greggs opened the 2,500th shop
Approximately in late May, early June Greggs PLC has achieved a significant milestone in its estate expansion strategy – with the opening of its 2,500th shop. In 2021, Greggs launched a five-year growth plan, outlining the ambition to reach significantly more than 3,000 shops in the UK in the longer term. This year alone, the company plans on opening between 140 and 160 new shops, with a focus on expanding Greggs presence in travel hubs and roadside locations to reach more customers. The 2,500th shop, located in a petrol forecourt at Sainsbury’s Cobham, is the company’s eighth shop with Sainsbury’s, and brings the total number of shops with supermarket partners, including Asda and Tesco, to 50 units.
