Tel Aviv / IL. (im) Bakeries across Israel are threatening to stop the supply of common white and dark bread if controlled prices are not hiked by ten percent, following the sharp increase in flour prices due to the international shortage in wheat supply.
According to «Israel Money» the prices of wheat and flour have jumped by 20 to 30 percent in recent weeks and some flour mills already halted flour supply to bakeries, because the latter refuse to pay the increased prices demanded.
Bakery owners claimed that they were unable to meet the rising cost of flour, and urged the Industry, Trade and Labor Ministry to update bread prices once again. Bread prices were last increased by 12,5 percent about two months ago.
Sources in the industry estimated that flour reserves would last for several more days, and warned that afterwards the country could be faced with a shortage in common bread.
