Kesko / FI. (kkc) Kesko Corporation has selected the builders of K-Citymarket Kuopio Haapaniemi. The main contractor is Jalon Rakentajat Oy. Work will start in July and August. The new store is expected to open in spring 2026. Jalon Rakentajat Oy from Mikkeli has been selected as the main contractor for the construction project. The other selected contractors are local companies Kuopion LVI-talo Oy, Sähkö Jave Oy and Caverion Suomi Oy. The new building will be approximately 12’000 square metres in size. It will be divided into K-Citymarket’s food and consumables departments and rentable front stores.
«We believe that the city of Kuopio will continue to grow, so it is great to be able to realise the third K-Citymarket in Kuopio. Now that construction work has started, the project is starting to take shape in the cityscape. The Haapaniemi site was purchased 18 years ago and it has been 13 years since the last new K-Citymarket opened in the area, so this is a historic investment. All the leasable front premises of K-Citymarket Haapaniemi have already been leased and the selection of the retailer will be made this summer,» says Jesse Kohonen, Kesko Regional Director Eastern Finland.
Kesko has renovated K-food stores with approximately EUR 1 billion in recent years and invests EUR 200-250 million annually in the development of the grocery store network.
In particular, K-Citymarket, which represents the hypermarket format, has seen significant sales growth in Finland and its impact on the market share of the grocery trade is substantial. The hypermarkets to be opened in the coming years will play a significant role in strengthening Kesko’s market share and further increasing sales. In addition to Kuopio, Kesko is building new K-Citymarkets in Lempäälä Ideapark, Lahti Paavola, Vantaa Kivisto and Porvoo Länsiranta in the coming years. This year, Kesko will also expand the K-Supermarket in Columbus Shopping Centre in Vuosaari, Helsinki, into a K-Citymarket.
