Oslo / NO. (ok) Orkla ASA pledges to remove 80 tonnes of salt from its Norwegian products in the period 2014 to 2018. «We support the Norwegian Directorate of Health´s goal to reduce the content of salt in food by 15 percent in this period, and have now set specific salt targets for each product category», states Stein Erik Hagen. Orkla has worked systematically to reduce the salt content in its products for many years. Since 2008, the content of salt in Pizza Grandiosa has been lowered by around 30 percent. Toro began reducing salt in 1983, and has cut the salt content in its soups and sauces by 40 percent. As a result of this work, Toro soups contain markedly less salt than the soups of many of its competitors. Orkla President and CEO Peter A. Ruzicka points out that salt is important for taste, but also for texture and shelf life. «A sensible approach is to reduce the salt content in food step by step over time. If the salt is removed too quickly, there is a risk that consumers will choose other, saltier products, or that they will add salt themselves, thereby defeating the purpose», says Ruzicka. The second meeting of the Minister of Health´s working group for food businesses was held on 27 October 2014. The first meeting took place on 04 June this year. As a follow-up to the previous meeting, the Directorate of Health invited food industry players to a meeting aimed at setting specific targets for reducing the salt content in key food categories. In addition to concretising efforts to reduce salt in food, the Health Minister also discussed food labelling systems at the meeting.
