Preliminary report: Anuga 2013 at a glance

Cologne / DE. (km) For the 32nd time, Anuga will impressively demonstrate its importance as the leading international platform for the global food and beverage industry. This year 6’777 exhibitors from 98 countries will be presenting their products and services from 05 to 09 October 2013 in Cologne. The trade fair will occupy the entire exhibition centre – a gross exhibition space of 284’000 square metres. Anuga has been completely booked out for months. EU Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger and Dr. Werner Hoyer, President of the European Investment Bank, are expected to attend the opening ceremony.


With 6’777 exhibitors, a figure that surpasses the total for 2011, Anuga will once again provide purchasers from the trade and buyers from the food service and catering market with a broadly based and multifaceted information and ordering platform. In addition to major market-leading companies, numerous mid-sized and small suppliers will be taking part.

The suppliers will come from 98 countries, and the proportion of exhibitors from abroad will be 88 percent. The largest contingents will be coming from Italy (1’043 exhibitors), Spain (447), the People´s Republic of China (409), France (255), Türkiye (239), Greece (221), the Netherlands (212), Belgium (189), the USA (189) and Thailand (161). Large numbers of participants will also be sent by Poland, the United Kingdom and Austria. This year there will be a modest increase in the number of group participations from Türkiye, Poland and the USA.


There will also be 825 German companies making use of the trade fair as a business platform. The fair will be subdivided into ten trade shows according to themes and focus areas: Anuga Fine Food; Anuga Drinks; Anuga Meat; Anuga Frozen Food|Anuga Chilled + Fresh Food; Anuga Dairy; Anuga Bread + Bakery, Hot Beverages; Anuga Organic; Anuga RetailTec; Anuga FoodService.

Gourmet products and regional specialities; Halal food; Organic products; Vegetarian products; Health and functional food; Kosher products; Finger food; In-house brands (private labels); Industrial ingredients; Fair trade products.

The trend themes at Anuga provide information that encompasses all of the trade shows. This information is available in the exhibitor database. Beginning in 2013, fair trade products will be one of the ten trend themes at Anuga. This new trend theme takes into account all of the certificates that are currently granted in the market.

Supporting programme

Conferences and presentations involving high-ranking participants will offer comprehensive information and many opportunities for sharing ideas with other sector players. The activities will officially begin with a get-together of trade and industry representatives at the Anuga Executive Summit on the evening before the first day of the fair. This year the keynote speakers will be Herbert Bolliger, President of the Directorate-General, Migros Genossenschafts-Bund (federation of Migros cooperatives) in Zurich (Switzerland), and Harry Brouwer, Chairman of Unilever Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Hamburg. In 2013 the event will be titled «Food Values – Appreciating, Creating and Securing Them». Other events will include the «Frozen Food» event; the get-together of the meat sector, «Meat Essential»; the WellFood Congress; and the «2nd European Halal Conference» as well as the «Summex» Conference, which will focus on models of cooperation between Russia and Europe.

Partner activities

BVLH RetailForum 2013: The Federal Association of the German Retail Grocery Trade (BVLH) is a co-organizer of Anuga. This year the theme of its stand will be «Sustainability, Food Safety, Transparency». There will be a special show and an event focusing on sustainability that will include Fairtrade, the Sustainable Cocoa Forum and the database project «Fish stocks online» (the middle section of the Boulevard).

The Federation of German Food and Drink Industries (BVE): In line with the slogan «Made in Germany – German Quality meets Global Markets», the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) and the BVE will present events at their stand several times each day with a focus on specialities of German cuisine. In addition, there will be discussions on the «Red Sofa» as well as a special exhibition on the topic of «Sustainability trends in the food industry» in Hall 10.2.

The Dehoga Catering Marketplace: The central communication and information platform of the hotel and catering industries at Anuga, organized by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga Bundesverband), Berlin.

Anuga Wine Special: Seminars and presentations on themes related to wine and fine foods, as well as wine tastings – of 100 selected Bordeaux wines, for example (Hall 7)
OliveOil Market: The new special show on the theme of olive oils, featuring expert advice and tastings (the Boulevard, middle)
Voll-Bio: An overview of the wide range of organic foods available commercially (Hall 5.1)
Anuga Culinary Stage: Cooking shows will be presented daily in a modern cooking studio; there will also be presentations of various catering topics (Hall 7)

Top events

The finale of the «Anuga Cook of the Year» competition – On 07 October 2013, the finale will be an all-day event. Eight young chefs will demonstrate their skills before a top-class jury that includes Dieter Müller, Thomas Bühner, Lea Linster, Jordi Cruz and Dirk Luther (Hall 7)

Grips + Co. – The finale of the competition for up-and-coming trade professionals. Around 800 young employees are expected to attend. The event will be hosted by the ProSieben presenter Daniel Aminati (07 October 2013, 11:00, Congress-Saal, Congress Centre East)

Ecotrophelia European Food Innovation Student Awards. The aim of this international competition is to get students enthusiastic about the food market and encourage them to develop new food products. The award ceremony will take place on 07 October 2013 (14:30, Kristallsaal, Congress Centre East)

23rd Forum for System Catering – A knowledge platform and sector meeting organized by the Dehoga Hotel and Restaurant Initiative. The event is expected to attract 800 high-ranking guests from the restaurant, hotel and catering supply sectors. The forum is a well-established event that serves as a central sector meeting offering great opportunities (08 October 2013, 10:00, Congress-Saal, Congress Centre East)

New opening times: On all five days of the fair, Anuga will open its doors at 10:00 instead of at 09:00 as has previously been the case. The doors will close at 19:00 with the exception of the last day of the fair, when they will close at 18:00. Anuga is open to trade visitors only.
