Russia: proposes a kind of «grain OPEC»

St. Petersburg / RU. (rian) Russia´s agriculture minister Alexej Gordejew pleads for the idea to set up an international organization to coordinate grain markets. The minister said in St. Petersburg, that countries like Ukraine and Kazakhstan have agreed with this proposal, Russian news agency «Novosti» reports. Russia, which exports an average of twelve million metric tons of grain a year, proposed in June approaching major grain producers and exporters with the idea of establishing an organization to coordinate grain production and trade globally – a kind of «grain OPEC». According to Gordejew the United States are considering the proposal and that talks on the issue with Australia have been slated for early September. The agriculture minister also hopes that Argentina, Canada and the European Union would welcome his idea.
