Union: Food workers determined to fight for 300 jobs

London / UK. (utu) Workers at the Bakkavor plant in Bourne, near Peterborough, United Kingdom, have vowed to fight for a future as the company prepares to axe one in four of the workforce in the new year – Unite the union says in a news release. The workers, members of Unite the union, fear that Bakkavor is poised to chop 300 jobs from the 1’200-strong workforce and force down wages for those remaining. A mass meeting of the workforce convened by Unite this week confirmed that the workers are not prepared to stand by while jobs are shed on this scale from the community. Bakkavor is one of the biggest suppliers of bagged salads, stir fry, pre-cut vegetables and pre-cut fruit to all leading UK supermarkets – with the exception of Asda – at the jobs-hit site. Bakkavor Group is a multi-national company with sites across the UK employing 11´500 workers in all. The head office of the group is in Reykjavik, Island.
